Responding to privacy concerns, the European Commission plans to crackdown on Facebook allowing users’ most personal information to be used to create tailored advertising. The Telegraph reports that an EC Directive, to be introduced in January, will ban such targeted advertising unless users specifically allow it.

What’s the Big Idea?

Currently, Facebook uses clever software to harvest information from people’s activities on the social networking site–whatever their privacy settings–and make it available to advertisers. The E. C. says users deserve more transparency and to know what data is collected and processed, and for what purposes.
