Violinist and humanitarian Midori Goto stopped by the Big Think offices today. She played show and tell with her priceless violin, made in 1734, which she said she thinks of like a partner, and she explained to us how there is a special chemistry between a performer and her instrument. Contrary to what one might think, playing the violin is a strenuous physical activity which one must prepare for like an athlete. Goto also told us some stories about how music has changed the lives of the children around the world that she has worked with as a U.N. Messenger of Peace. She said it is everyone’s duty—whether a concert violinist or a construction worker—to be engaged and charitable citizens of the planet.
