The ease of modern travel has encouraged emigration across the globe but that does not mean leaving one’s native culture for another has become easy. Art Markman, a cognitive scientist at the University of Texas, asks what psychological benefits there might be to a multicultural experience. “There are few experiences in life that require you to really re-think the many aspects of life that you take for granted. Living in another culture and adapting to it is one of the most powerful of those learning opportunities,” Markman says.
