“Us ranchers on the Great Plains are used to adapting. City folk could learn much from the way we use our scarce resources.” One conservationist rancher writes about her hopes for The Guardian. Linda M Hasselstrom, who operates a working ranch, says her life is defined by the necessity to adapt to natural variation—particularly drought—yet those in the city have come to know excess that doesn’t correspond to nature’s rhythm. “Ranching adapts to weather every day,” she says. “Humans must consider the future and conserve.”
