Verizon workers called off their strike after the company agreed to temporarily extend their contract and return to the bargaining table. Forty-five thousand workers will return to their jobs on Monday. The workers have been off the job for two weeks.

The company tried to crush the union, but the workers held together and forced their employer back to the bargaining table. Both sides reserve the right to abandon negotiations.

Labor historian Erik Loomis writes:

The big victory, saving jobs and benefits, has not been achieved. That will be determined at the bargaining table. But the fact that Verizon was forced to that table in the first place is a significant victory that should embolden workers to take a harder line against the company than before.
