“This is what change looks like,” remarked US President Barack Obama moments after the final House vote passed his universal health care legislation in an historic victory. He said the passage proved that “we are still people capable of doing big things and tackling our biggest challenges.” He continued: “Today’s vote answers the dreams of so many who have fought for this. Long after the debate fades away and the prognostication fades away and the dust settles, what will remain standing…is a health care system that incorporates ideas from both parties.” The Washington Post reports that Obama described the new legislation as not “radical” but instead “major”. He said it “moves us decisively in the right direction.” Adding: “Some have predicted another siege of parliamentary manoeuvring. It’s time to bring this debate to a close,” he said, referring to next week’s action in the Senate, which must approve a package of changes to the bill and could spark continued political wrangling over what is, so far, a success for the new President.
