In what has been a long legal battle, Google’s plans to build the world’s biggest digital library, by scanning paper books from public and university libraries, has been dealt a serious blow. “Authors opposed to the revised Google books settlement are celebrating a surprise ruling in their favour by a New York judge. After 13 long months of deliberation, Judge Denny Chin has sided with critics of the settlement, throwing it out on the grounds that it is ‘not fair, adequate and reasonable’. The ruling is the latest development in a long-running battle over Google’s controversial plan to digitise millions of books and create the world’s biggest digital library.”
