David Remnick: I have no idea.
It’s hard to know where all this began. But in my life, I grew up reading Mad magazine and then National Lampoon. And next thing you know where was “Saturday Night Live” and “David Letterman.” Clearly this kind of highly ironic form increased, and increased, and increased. And some of it is sublime. Some of it is wonderful. Some of it’s boring, and some of it’s nasty. And really I’m kind of a one trick pony, and I try to pay attention to the stuff that I like.
