Will Rogers (1979-1935) was born in what is now Oklahoma to a prominent Cherokee family. He grew up to be one of the most famous celebrities of his era, apperaring in dozens of films and penning thousands of newspaper columns. Best known for his wit, his humor often came from the perspective of a “common man” character befitting the progressive era.

“There’s no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.”

-Will Rogers, as quoted in Peter’s Quotations : Ideas for Our Time (1979) by Laurence J. Peter, p. 524 (h/t Wikiquote)
