Linda M Hasselstrom, who operates a working ranch, says her life is defined by the necessity to adapt to natural variation—particularly drought—yet those in the city have come to know excess that doesn’t correspond to nature’s rhythm. “Ranching adapts to weather every day,” she says. “Humans must consider the future and conserve.”
