It is the bane of our existence that the electronic devices that we rely on so heavily have such a short battery life. 


And yet, we are blessed to have a limitless supply of one energy source that can keep our devices going: urine.

In the video below, Dr. Ioannis Ieropoulos, a researcher at Bristol Robotics Laboratory, explains how the microbial fuel cell acts as an energy converter. Urine is exceptionally good as a fuel for tiny organisms that break down waste and produce electrons.

Ieropoulos and his team have harnessed enough power through a process they have invented to power a number of electronic devices as stand-alone demonstrations. In fact, Ieropoulos says his team has reached the point where they can power up a normal mobile phone.
