A Newsboy in Mobile, Alabama – October 1914

One-hundred years ago, this youngster was likely shouting out headlines related to the Battle of Warsaw or the Boston Braves' victory in the first ever World Series sweep.

The photo above is another by the American photographer and social advocate¬†Lewis W. Hine, whose work often documented working children. The youngster above, barefoot but otherwise fairly well-adorned, probably shouted headlines that day detailing events in war-torn Europe. The theatre advertisement to his right reads “Oct. 24,” only a few days after the Battle of Warsaw ended in German defeat. A shadow slips into the picture from the bottom right, one which you imagine probably belonged to Hine himself.
