Another week, another fine selection of comments.
Facebook vs. Google: The Battle of Self Projection versus Who We Really Are
Dave McAtee: FB is typically an echo chamber. It’s the way it is designed, it feeds you only what you like. There is no context for Google searches. There is no way to know why anyone searches for anything.
Do You Use a Time-Out to Discipline Your Kids? You’re Probably Doing It Wrong
Chris Geo: Time out isnt about punishment. That is what people dont get. It is about breaking momentum. When a kid has gotten to the point for whatever reason where it becomes a battle of wills, they become completely oppositional or if the parent’s own anger is getting out of control the time out is a reset button. I have changed my own behaviors and find that my kids are responding better. The first thing i changed was not assigning punishment or discipline while i myself was in a reactionary state or angry. It really depends on children as individuals just like every other person everyone is different.
We Know Nothing of War
Jake Fron: Most people don’t know anything about war. Most people think they know something about war because the watched a movie, played a video game, read a book, talked to one veteran or family member. Point is if you haven’t served, actually been over there, or lived through it in general, you know fuck all about war. If people knew so much about war we wouldn’t be eager to get into one all the time. Do people know of war in a general sense? Yes, but that is not what the article was talking about from my perspective.
I think the article touched on what a lot of people experience, that there is a disconnect between those that go and those that don’t. At least here in the states the active duty size is 1.3 million; that is not a lot of people and as a result of being so small in the first place, few people have any connection with the military. As such your average joe doesnt know anything about the military, and by extension, war. It is something in a far off land being fought by a small group, for questionable reasons which they a regular citizen give very few shits about. It really doesn’t effect them enough to make them take notice, which is pretty dangerous as the government can use its military assests, simply because they can.
Now that doesn’t mean people can’t infer, ask questions, assume, read a history book, watch a movie, or lack some sort of compassion or hold some empathy for war and those that go through it.
Will Men Ever Learn to Deal With Their Emotions?
Shirley Clute: For over 2000 years they’ve claimed credit for every single advancement in human history as if they were done exclusively by men while simultaneously glossing over most of the screw ups, so it’s easy to see why they’re burdened with an over inflated opinion of themselves and their abilities. Welcome to the new level playing field — looks like it’s going to be a tougher game for you guys going forward.
