Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas Turns 40 Years Old This Year

One of the American Southwest’s most famous art installations, Cadillac Ranch was created by members of the avant-garde group Ant Farm: Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez, and Doug Michels, in collaboration with an eccentric landowner named Stanley Marsh 3. Originally just a straight line of half-buried Cadillacs, visitors over the years have added their own touches to the display by painting, tagging, and breaking off pieces of the cars. Cadillac Ranch was created in 1974, exhumed and reinstalled in 1997, and today remains visible from nearby I-40.
