Episode Deconstruction Technology Takes Fan Videos To A New Level

Developers at a French laboratory have created a program called StoryVisualizer that can deconstruct a television episode into component parts — plot, scene, character — and reassemble those parts in ways that allow users to focus on one or more story elements. It does this by taking advantage of the ever-increasing amounts of data capable of being stored in digital video recorders. Lead developer Hervé Bredin says of all this information, “We think it’s time users had search and browsing tools to use within these digital video collections.”

What’s the Big Idea?

StoryVisualizer could be very useful for those who want to quickly catch up on shows that have been stored for a long time. For hardcore fans of a show, though, it also gives them a new way to create videos around a favorite character or plot line. As for the development team, the next step is to integrate the software into existing systems. Bredin even speculates that at some point in the future a fan may be able to simply say the name of their favorite character and call up all the scenes with that person in it.
