The home of the future will be a functioning ecosystem, taking advantage of its own energy processes and not wasting any potential power source. One such concept is the Microbial Home which powers kitchen lights and appliances by recycling food leftovers. The leftovers naturally decompose to produce methane gas which can then be fed to the cooking range and gas mantle lights. “Not even the sludge that remains after the materials get digested goes to waste—it’s meant to be used as compost.”

What’s the Big Idea?

An energy efficient kitchen is only one room in the home of the future. Creators of the Microbial House have also designed a toilet that processes human waste matter to create energy and a terra cotta larder that keeps food instead of a fridge. Living in harmony with the environment will also mean keeping our bodies healthy. In the Microbial House, health statistics will be displayed on the bathroom mirror. The technology reminds us of the importance in leading eco-conscious lifestyles.
