Dark matter is four times more common in the universe than visible matter. How do we know that it’s there if we’ve never seen it? The force of gravity keeping our planets from flying off into oblivion is not strong enough to keep them all in place. It’s as though there’s another force that’s helping them, and that force is dark matter.
