Adeus, Portugal. Olá, Angola.

What’s the Latest Development?
Spurred on by the Euro crisis, Portuguese citizens are emigrating to the former colony of Angola in search of better financial opportunities. Even Portugal’s prime minister has encouraged the exodus given the dismal unemployment rate (36%) for workers under the age of 25. Angola is just one destination; Portuguese are also moving to Mozambique and Brazil, two other former colonies without a language barrier, as well as to other areas in northern Europe. The last time Portugal experienced this kind of emigration was more than 40 years ago, when the country was ruled by a Fascist regime.
What’s the Big Idea?
Portuguese are joining the ranks of other European professionals who are seeking greater prospects overseas. In Angola, these prospects are being generated by a thriving oil-based economy and great gaps in the skilled labor force. Despite its recent growth, it’s still a poor country plagued by corruption and infrastructure issues. However, as one soon-to-be migrant explains, the reduced cost of living makes it worth the trip.
